The Year 1851 It's time to get the hell out of Pennsylvania. I sell the farm, pack up everything necessary to start over and buy a covered wagon, driving west toward a new beginning. Little did I know that my granddaughter, Ella, sneaked into the back of my wagon and didn't show herself until it was too late to turn back. She lays down the law on how things are going to be, and I rejoice...and then get hard. It's a dream come true.
“What the Sam Hill? Ella, what the hell are you doing here?”
“I’m coming with you, Grandpa. You can’t leave me alone with Uncle Ned. He…he touches me and now that you’re leaving, it’ll get much worse. Maybe if my father hadn’t run away when Mama died, I’d have a father to watch over me. But he did run away, and I refuse to be left behind.”
“Ned touches you? You mean he…”
“Yes, that’s exactly what I mean. With you gone, he’s going to feel entitled to have me whenever he wants.”
“Are you still a virgin?”
“Yes, I’ve managed to get away from him but he just laughs and says…"Soon, Ella. Soon.”
The damned bastard! How dare he touch my girl!
“I suppose it’s done. We can’t turn back now. I’ll send them a letter at the next fort, letting them know I’ve got you.”
I’ve got you…finally.
“What’s that on your hand?” I say, looking at my wife’s gold wedding band.
“Women who aren’t married aren’t allowed on this trip, right?”
“Yes, but aren’t you a little young to be posing as my wife? Crissakes, Ella!”
“No, I’m not too young. I’m old enough to cook, clean, and take care of a husband. I’m old enough to have a child.”
I can’t stop it. The image of Ella’s belly being swollen with my child makes me want her, and I know I’m going to Hell when I die.
